Softball: Norwich closes 2018 season with sweep of Regis

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WESTON, Mass. - The Norwich University softball team closed the 2018 season on a high note, sweeping Regis (Mass.) on the road on Monday evening.

Norwich (12-16, 10-14 GNAC) rallied with six runs in the top of the sixth inning, highlighted by Naomi Rinaldo's (Middlefield, Conn.) second grand slam of the season to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 victory in Game 1. The Cadets then kept the momentum rolling with an 11-0 mercy-rule win in five innings in the second game.

The Cadets trailed 5-0 after four innings in the opener before they started to work their way back into the game. Freshman Jenna Sprague (Brookfield, Vt.) singled home Sarah Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) to get the Cadets on the board in the fifth. Sophomore Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.) hit a sacrafice fly to left field that scored Makenna Wade (Pensacola, Fla.) to cut the deficit to 5-2. Sprague then reached first on an error with the bases loaded, allowing Madison Miller (Long Lake, N.Y.) to score before Rinaldo's big bomb.

Oliver evened her record on the year to 7-7, picking up the victory after giving up four earned runs on 10 hits and two walks.

In Game 2, Perry, Wade and Miller each notched three hits to the led the offense, while Perry, Wade and Madelyn Folcik (Wilmot, N.H.) each had two RBIs as the Cadets dominated from start to finish. Norwich scored multiple runs in each of the first innings to build up an 11-0 lead that Regis could never answer. Kaylee Blanchard (Worcester, Mass.) and Folcik each had two hits.

Perry picked up the victory in the circle to improve to 4-7. She surrendered just two hits and two walks in one of her best pitching performances of her career. Sprague came on to record the final out and secure the victory.

Norwich pounded out 15 hits in the win.

Despite finishing in a tie with Lasell at 10-14 for the eighth spot in the standings, Norwich did not qualify for the postseason due to losing the tiebreaker with the Lasers.
