Men's Lacrosse: Cadets Edge In-State Rival, Castleton, 13-9

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Down by two goals in the second quarter, the Norwich University men's lacrosse team scored eight of the game's next nine goals to capture a 13-9 victory over Castleton University on Tuesday at Sabine Field.

Norwich evens its overall record at 7-7 following the non-conference game while Castleton drops to 6-8 on the year. The Cadets lead the all-time series against the Spartans, 31-15, which stands as the most single victories against any one opponent since the team's inception in 1969.

Junior Matt Shea (Arlington, Mass.) paced Norwich with three goals while five goal scorers recorded two goals, including junior Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) who finished with three assists for five total points (2-3=5). He also became only the 16th student-athlete in team history to reach the century mark in career point scoring (71-33=104), doing so in 46 career games.

Trailing by a 7-5 margin with 11:42 left in the first half, junior Nolan Aurelia (Stratford, Conn.) and sophomore Cody Moore (Canton, N.Y.) registered back-to-back unassisted tallies to draw Norwich even. Shea and junior Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) extended the Cadets scoring streak, striking only 33 seconds apart in the final minute of the first half.

Ahead by a 9-7 margin at halftime, Aurelia followed a Castleton goal with a man-up tally, set up by Kennedy, to start another Norwich goal-scoring streak that swelled the Cadets lead to 13-8. Sam Siegel scored both of his team's goals in the fourth quarter, giving him five goals and one assist on the evening (5-1=6), but the Cadets were able to ride their offensive momentum to the in-state victory over Castleton.

Junior Tyler LoPorto (Weston, Fla.) earned his fourth victory of the season for Norwich, making 10 saves on 19 shots. Brandon Myron stood tall for the Spartans, but was saddled with the loss after yielding 13 goals on 25 shots against.

The Cadets finished with 40 ground balls, 38 shots taken and nine caused turnovers. Junior Jack Dwyer (Shelburne, Vt.) led Norwich with seven ground balls and 11 face-off victories and senior captain James Connors (Marshfield, Mass.) was strong defensively with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Norwich returns to action Saturday, Apr. 22 when it hosts Rivier in a key Great Northeast Athletic Conference fixture at 4 p.m. on Sabine Field.
