Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team advanced to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Semifinals for the 14th straight year on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Emmanuel College.
Senior captain Colin Lozito (Wilmington, Vt.) had a goal and an assist to lead the Norwich offense in the victory and helped the Cadets extend their unbeaten streak vs. GNAC opponents to 23 straight games.
Sophomore forward Luke Gleadle (Gilbert, Ariz.) added his team-leading 11th goal as well for Norwich as it avenged two straight ties vs. Emmanuel in the last two regular season meetings.
Norwich (10-3-5, 6-0-4 GNAC) took the lead in the 27th minute with Lozito sending a through ball over the top that Gleadle ran down on the right wing and then rifled a shot into the near side upper 90 with authority from 25 yards out to give the Cadets a lead they would never relinquish.
Lozito gave NU an insurance tally with his third goal of the season in the 79th minute off a great individual effort. Lozito bodied his man in the box and made a quick move around him while spinning and then fired a shot near side past Emmanuel goalie Jonathan Ferrarini. Ferrarini made 15 saves for the Saints, but it wasn't enough.
Norwich outshot Emmanuel 29-9 for the game. Junior goalie Brendan Germano (Monroe Township, N.J.) made three saves for Norwich to pick up his sixth shutout of the season.
Norwich will now face Johnson & Wales in the GNAC Semifinals on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for the third straight season. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie earlier this season in the regular season. Johnson & Wales beat Albertus Magnus 1-0 in the quarterfinal round. Norwich beat JWU 2-0 in last year's GNAC Semifinals on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium, dethroning the then three-time defending conference champions.
