NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's soccer team defeated Johnson State 2-0 on the final day of the 2016 NU Women's Soccer Classic on Monday evening.
Senior Mehgan McMullen (Northfield, Vt.) and junior Ashley Carvalho (Pinellas Park, Fla.) each scored a goal, while junior Leandra Flores-Nieves (Colorado Springs, Colo.) turned aside all four shots she faced to pick up the shutout.
Carvalho staked Norwich (1-1-1) to a lead it would never look back from in the 17th minute for the Cadets' first goal of the 2016 season. Carvalho tucked a left-footed shot into the upper right hand corner of the net from 30 yards out for her first of the season.
Norwich added to its lead in the 62nd minute when McMullen fired a shot that deflected off a Johnson State defender and into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Freshman Jordan Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) picked up the assist after the two worked a give and go on the right side of the penalty box.
The Cadets outshot Johnson State (0-3-0) 38-4, with McMullen tallying a team-high 10 shots. Naomi Quad made 14 saves for Johnson State.
Flores-Nieves picked up her second shutout of the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.30. Her save percentage is also .974 with just one goal against in 38 shots on target.
The College of Staten Island ended up claiming the 2016 NU Women's Soccer Classic crown by virtue of a +5 goal differential to Norwich's +2. There have now been four different winners in the history of the classic (WPI – 2013, Norwich – 2014, Johnson State – 2015 and CSI - 2016).
Norwich returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when it kicks off the 2016 GNAC conference season with a trip to Emmanuel.
