Box Score BOSTON – The Norwich University women's volleyball team dropped a straight-set contest at Emmanuel (Mass.) on Wednesday, falling to 2-8 overall on the year and to 1-2 within Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. The host Saints move to 6-10 on the year, remaining undefeated in four GNAC matches.
Emmanuel secured the 3-0 victory via set scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-20. The Saints move to 10-1 all-time against Norwich dating back to the team's first meeting on Oct. 21, 2006.
Freshman Monika Schneider (Hollis, N.H.) posted a team-leading five kills and seven digs for the Cadets. Sophomore Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) dished out assists on all but one of her team's 16 kills on the evening while senior Rebecca Gibson (Milford, N.H.) led the way with two service aces.
The Saints used a 6-0 scoring run to open the match and never looked back, at one point posting seven-straight points to create a decisive 21-9 advantage. Norwich would tally five of the set's final seven points, but the early scoring runs by the hosts propelled them to victory.
After a second set where Norwich mustered only four kills while committing nine errors, both teams were tied at 20 in the third stanza. Back-to-back Saints kills preceded back-to-back ball handling errors by Norwich and the match ended off a kill from Emmanuel's Katharine Journeay, set up by Carly Church.
Mary Shelow led Emmanuel with 16 kills. Samantha DeMarco handed out a team-best 18 assists while Sarah Schemerhorn hammered home six of her team's 10 service aces. Casey Sheehan and Cassie Chruscielski reached 11 digs for the Saints.
Norwich returns home this Saturday, Oct. 1, welcoming Saint Joseph's (Maine) to Northfield for a 1 p.m. league match.
