Women's Soccer: Cadets Blanked In GNAC Opener

Box Score

BOSTON – The Norwich University women's soccer team dropped a 5-0 contest to Emmanuel (Mass.) in both teams' Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday. Norwich falls to 1-2-1 overall on the year while Emmanuel earns its first victory of the year in five games played.

The Saints potted three goals across 4:12 as Alison MacDonald scored her team's first goal only 15:25 into the contest. Courtney Freadman put her team up 2-0, forcing home a Kayla Generis pass a short time later. Generis added a goal of her own at 19:37, facing Norwich with a large deficit.

Generis scored once again only 6:09 into the second half to create a 4-0 advantage before Maggie Carey, who assisted Generis' goal, struck for her team's fifth goal in the 59th minute. In total, Emmanuel outshot the Cadets by a strong 31-to-3 margin and took eight of the game's 11 corner kicks.

Norwich goalkeeper Leandra Flores-Nieves (Colorado Springs, Colo.) allowed five goals, but would finish with nine saves on the afternoon across 58:42. Holly Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) would relieve Flores-Nieves following the fifth goal of the game for Emmanuel – she made five saves across the final 31:18 of regulation time.

Victoria Laroche and Alexis Gawron split time evenly in goal for the Saints, with the former making their team's lone save on the day.

Norwich will travel to Plymouth State University this Wednesday, Sept. 14, taking on the Panthers in a 4 p.m. road contest.
