CASTLETON, Vt. - The Norwich University softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at Castleton University on Wednesday afternoon in the Cadets' first games since its spring break trip to Florida.

Castleton (4-4) took the first game 8-0 in six innings before following up with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap. Norwich dropped to 0-10 on the season.

Norwich fell victim to two big innings in the first game with the Spartans tallying four runs in the bottom of the third and and the sixth. Brittany Brayman did most of Castleton's damage with a three-run home run and five total RBIs in the first game to lead the Spartan offense.

Norwich had five different hitters tally singles, but the Cadets were unable to push any runs across the plate vs. Castleton's Taylor Paquette. Freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson (Stockbridge, Vt.) took the loss after surrendering six earned runs on seven hits and seven walks, while striking out five. Freshman Shea Kalscheur (Cross Plains, Wis.) collected her first collegiate hit.

In game two, Norwich's Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) threw six strong innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs on two walks and one strikeout. However, Castleton got off to a strong start with a run in the bottom of the first and three more in the second to take a lead it would never look back from.

Oliver helped herself with a single, while Kassy Kazimierczak (Adams, Mass.) had a hit, as well as Taylor Morris (Haverhill, N.H.). Freshman Mallori Cesario (Bradenten, Fla.) drove home Kazimierczak home in the top of the fifth inning for Norwich's only run. 

Norwich will look for its first win of 2016 when it hosts Rivier University on Saturday in its first GNAC games of the season.
