Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Norwich University men's lacrosse team suffered a 16-5 defeat in its season-opener at Plattsburgh State Wednesday evening.
The Cadets dip to 0-1 and will look to get into the win column on the weekend with a pair of road games at UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday and at Maritime (N.Y.) on Sunday. Plattsburgh picked up its first win of the season and are now 1-2 on the year.
Five different players scored for the Cadets in the loss, while junior attacker Ryan Callahan led the Cardinals with four goals on eight shots as senior attacker Patrick Nash scored three goals and an assist.
Two minutes into the opening faceoff sophomore midfielder Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) scored the first goal of the season and of the game for the Cadets before the Cardinals responded with eight unanswered goals for the 8-1 lead. Senior midfielder Jimmy Warden (North Andover, Mass.) found the back of the net on a pass from Jenkins to break Norwich's scoring drought in the second quarter on an extra man opportunity (EMO) to make it 8-2.
Plattsburgh would score back-to-back goals before Norwich took advantage of its second EMO of the quarter as sophomore Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) fed a pass to senior midfielder Ryan McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) for the Cadets' third goal of the game. The Cardinals closed out the first half with Callahan scoring his fourth and final goal of the night for the 11-3 lead at the break.
Plattsburgh kept the Cadets off the board in the third quarter and scored five unanswered goals for the 16-3 lead before Norwich returned the favor and held the Cardinals scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Cadets would add back-to-back goals from sophomores Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.) and Alex Bown (Davidson, N.C.) to end the night.
Freshman Ian Kriger (Burlington, Mass.) recorded his first collegiate start in between the pipes for Norwich and came up with eight saves in the 24 shots faced. Classmate Liam DeBiase (Scotia, N.Y.) also saw time in the cage in the final quarter. Plattsburgh had four goalies in between the pipes that came up with five saves combined with senior Matt Massaria picking up the win for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh outshot Norwich, 45-19, forced 13 caused turnovers, scooped up with 43 ground balls and won 16 of the 24 faceoffs in the game.
Defensively, the Cadets had four players credited with a caused turnover and collected 24 ground balls. Norwich went 2-6 on man advantage and cleared the ball 16 times out of the 21 attempts. Sophomore Jack Dwyer (Shelburne, Vt.) won eight battles on the face and picked up a pair of ground balls.
