Box Score NASHUA, N.H. – The Norwich University men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five straight games with a 4-0 victory over Rivier University on Thursday afternoon at Raider Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
Freshman Luke Gleadle (Gilbert, Ariz.) scored twice to lead the Cadets' offense as they locked up a first round home game for the upcoming GNAC Tournament. Senior Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) scored a goal and added an assist, while Ransford Ahenkora (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal as well.
After a scoreless first half, Norwich broke through almost four minutes into the second half as his unassisted tally made it 1-0 in favor of the Cadets. Zimmerman's goal pushed his career total to 49, leaving him one shy of tying Sani Siric '05 for third on the Norwich all-time goal scoring list.
Gleadle provided enough insurance as he netted his fourth and fifth goals of the season at 63:15 and 67:33. His first goal of the game came off a corner kick set play from senior Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) and his second goal was a beautiful header on a cross from Zimmerman.
Junior Ransford Ahenkora (Bronx, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the first time this season as he knocked home a feed from Carlos Guerra (Mission, Texas) with time expiring.
Rivier freshman goalkeeper Collin Deyarmin corralled three saves on the afternoon while counterpart, senior Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.), stopped all five shots he faced. Whaley extended his shutout streak to an impressive 470 straight minutes and he has still yet to surrender a goal in a GNAC contest this season.
Norwich regained sole possession of second place with Thursday's victory. The Cadets are now 8-4-3 overall and 5-0-3 in GNAC play. They have 18 points and lead third-place Johnson & Wales by two points. Norwich will lock up second place with a victory on Saturday at Albertus Magnus. Saint Joseph's (Maine) has clinched the GNAC regular season title with 22 points already. The Cadets kickoff with Albertus Magnus on Saturday at 4 p.m.
