Box Score 2 VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University softball team split a doubleheader with Carlow University on Tuesday on the third day of the Treasure Coast Spring Invitational at Historic Dodgertown.
Norwich (1-3, 0-0 GNAC) downed Carlow 8-3 in the first game of the day, before dropping the second game 6-2.
Norwich scored twice in each of the first two innings to race out to a 4-0 lead. Carlow scored all three of its runs in the top of the third to cut into the deficit briefly. However, the Cadets answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. NU tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth to cap the scoring.
Freshman third baseman Sarah Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) led the offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Senior Melissa Rome (Enfield, Conn.) had two RBIs as well to help lead the Cadets' offensive efforts.
Juniors Payton Warner (Harwich, Mass.) and Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.) had two hits, while Perry and freshman Olivia Bussiere (Northfield, Vt.) each scored two runs.
Junior Taylor Morris (Rochester, N.H.) had a solid effort in the circle, going the distance, giving up one earned run on five hits and three walks, while striking out two. She also helped herself with a RBI single and freshman Kassy Kazimierczak (Adams, Mass.) had a RBI too.
In the second game, Norwich was plagued by errors as all six Carlow runs were unearned coming in the first two innings.
Perry was strong on the mound, limiting Carlow to just four hits in six innings, while walking two and striking out eight. However, the four errors in the opening two innings were too much to overcome.
Warner and Morris each had two hits to lead the Cadets' offense and Jacqueline Farr (Glendale, Ariz.) had a RBI.
Norwich returns to action on Wednesday with a pair of games vs. USC Sumter and Penn State Brandywine.
