Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Simmons College by scores of 27-25, 25-12, 25-19 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday night.
The Cadets drop to 0-5 in GNAC play and 3-10 on the year, while Simmons improves to 4-2 in the league and 7-9 overall.
Senior outside hitter
Tara Lyons (Pocasset, Mass.) recorded a team-high 11 kills, becoming the program's third ranked play all-time with 563 career kills. Lyons would also tack on seven digs and two total blocks, while freshman
Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) came up with a team-high 10 digs for the Cadets. Sophomore setter
Katie Crane (Avon, N.Y.) was credited with 20 assists on the night.
Simmons was led by junior Cailin Frederickson (Columbia, Md.) with 13 kills along with three service aces and three digs. Junior Kat Guiliotte (New Bedford, Mass.) came up with a team-high 10 digs with seven assists and three aces for the Sharks as junior setter Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) was credited with 18 assists on the night.
Both teams traded points in the first set with the lead no wider than two points throughout the set before Simmons clinched the first point on a kill followed by a service ace from Amber Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev.) for the 27-25 score.recor
The second set was deadlocked for the 6-6 score until Simmons collected 11 straight points to jump ahead 17-6 before closing out the second set, 25-12.
The Cadets came roaring in the third set, looking to get ahead and did so with a five point lead before giving up two errors as the Sharks rallied back with three kills to knot it up at 11 points apiece. After a Norwich timeout, the Sharks continued its offensive attack, only to commit errors themselves as the Cadets rallied back into the match at 15-15. Simmons would add on five more points before the Cadets rallied back with three extra points until the Sharks closed out the third and final set, 25-19, for the win.
Norwich is off for the weekend and will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 as the Cadets take on Lyndon State College for the 6:30 p.m. contest on the road.
