NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team scored twice in the first half and held on for a 2-1 victory over Norwich on Wednesday afternoon at the Sally Shaw Veitch Turf Field.
CSC Sophomore Rachel Quaye put the home team on the board seven minutes into the match with her first tally of the season. Quaye received a pass from senior Sarah Little, which she volleyed and struck into the left corner of the net.
Colby-Sawyer doubled its lead at the 26:21 mark to 2-0. Freshman Corrie Hoyt dribbled by a defender and created space that allowed an opening for a shot. Hoyt brought the ball into the right half of the 18-yard box and shot cross-corner past the keeper for her first collegiate goal.
The Chargers held a 9-1 edge in shots and a 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard at intermission.
CSC Sophomore Lizzie Jorgensen thought she had given Colby-Sawyer a 3-0 lead at 77:58, but her shot ricocheted off the cross bar and back into the field of play. Norwich took advantage and began a charge into its offensive end. Freshman Tiana Cass (Torrington, Conn.) gained control of the ball 40 yards from the Chargers' net and raced away from the defenders. Cass had a breakaway down the right side and finished her chance into the left side of the net at 78:24 to cut the Cadets' deficit in half. The goal was Cass' second of the season.
Each team had a late chance at tacking on another goal, but both goalies were up to the task and made the save.
Junior Karley Hamilton made a pair of saves for Colby-Sawyer in the win.
Sophomore Molly Miller (Raymond, Maine) had eight stops for Norwich.
Colby-Sawyer held a 19-6 advantage in shots and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.
Norwich will look to get back on track when it hosts Castleton State on Saturday at 6 p.m. on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
