Box Score NASHUA, N.H. - The Norwich University women's soccer team snapped its winless skid with a 3-2 victory over Rivier on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
The loss sends the Raiders to 6-9-0 overall and 1-8-0 in the conference. Norwich earned its first GNAC win as the Cadets improved to 1-7-1 in conference play and 3-9-1 on the season.
The Cadets took the lead in the 25th minute as Clara Leister (Hartland, Vt.) deflected a shot off a Rivier defender for the early lead.
Rivier knoted the game at 1-1 in the 56th minute when sophomore Maggie Cohoon converted a penalty shot after a foul inside the box.
Norwich regained the lead just over 10 minutes later as Alex Frank (Medford, N.J.) was able to lace a free kick over the outstretched arms of Rivier freshman goalkeeper Lauren Goodspeed. The Cadets then added an insurance goal in the 88th minute as Tiana Cass (Torrington, Conn.) knocked home a pass from Frank.
That goal was important for Norwich as Rivier sophomore Megan Caron dribbled around the defense and netted the Raiders' second goal just 13 seconds after the Cass goal.
Goodspeed made nine saves on the evening while her counterpart, Holly Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) stopped seven of nine shots on net.
Rivier will return to GNAC action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel down to Connecticut for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff with the University of Saint Joseph. Norwich will also return to GNAC action as they travel to Boston, Mass. for a 7 p.m. game at Simmons College.
