Box Score 2 KINGSTOWN, R.I.-- The weather issues this weekend in Northfield robbed the Cadets of a chance at their first home series of 2013, forcing the Maroon and Gold to play on the road vs. GNAC foe, Johnson & Wales, on the turf at the University of Rhode Island.
The Cadets came out sluggish in game one, squandering a bases-loaded, one-out opportunity in the top of the first before surrendering an eight run frame to the Wildcats in the bottom half.
Freshman starter Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) was saddled with the loss in his first career start, lasting just 2/3 of an inning. Senior Sam Philbrook (Rochester, Mass.) pitched well out of the bullpen, going 3.1 innings, allowing just one earned run and racking up four strikeouts.
Offensively, Norwich had a chance to get back in the game right away, loading the bases with nobody out in the top of the second inning against Wildcats starter Sean Haugh after a leadoff single by Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.), a single by Devin Cilley (Tunbridge, Vt.) and a walk to Nicholas Gendron (Alstead, N.H.).
But Haugh wriggled out of trouble, getting a strikeout before the Cadets put across one run on a sacrifice fly by Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.). Another strikeout ended the frame.
The Cadets had just five hits in game one with Sean Gerich (Chicago, Ill.) and Place picking up two apiece.
Game two was dominated by Wildcats starter John Amodeo, who went the distance, allowing just three Norwich hits and picking up 14 strikeouts.
Freshman Mike Doyle (Weymouth, Mass.) went 1-3 to continue his hot streak at the plate, while freshmen John Flanagan (West Groton, Mass.) and Cody Lindell (East Cranston, R.I.) added singles as well.
Senior Brad Hudson (Eugene, Ore.) pitched well in defeat, going five innings on the mound and adding four punchouts.
The Cadets will be back in action on Tuesday when they hit the road for a non-conference showdown against Middlebury College.
