Baseball: Norwich Drops Pair to Open GNAC Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WEST HAVEN, Ct.—The Norwich University baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader to open up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday, falling 9-1 in game one and 10-7 in game two to homestanding Albertus Magnus.

The losses drop the Cadets to 1-8 (0-2 GNAC) while the Falcons improve to 4-7 (2-0).

The Cadets got a solid start on the mound in game one from senior Sam Philbrook (Rochester, Mass.) who worked three innings, yielding just one run and two walks while striking out four.

Philbrook left the game with the score knotted at one after freshman Cody Lindell (Cranston, R.I.) hit a sacrifice fly in the top of fourth that scored Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.).

But once Philbrook departed it was all Falcons, who scored eight more times in their next three at-bats. The Cadets used five pitchers in the game with senior Brad Hudson (Eugene, Ore.) getting tagged with the loss.

Game two had a much different feel to it as the Cadets came out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first after senior Dustin Shimkus (Collinsville, Ill.) roped a double off the left the field fence to score freshman Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) and then freshman Mike Doyle (Weymouth, Mass.) doubled to bring home Shimkus.

Doyle and Whaley touched home later on the the third double of the inning, produced by junior Nicholas Gendron (Alstead, N.H.).

Whaley gave back one run in the bottom of the first before the Falcons picked up six in the second to take a 7-4 lead.

Norwich would come roaring back in the fourth, scoring twice including a double to the wall by Baker that scored Charles Schaub (East Hampton, Conn.).

The Cadets would tie the game in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Brandon Place (Concord, N.H.) but the Falcons immediately put up three runs in the bottom half to take the 10-7 lead and the Cadets would get no closer.

Hudson was the tough-luck loser in game two, working three innings, allowing just two earned runs.

Norwich will play again on Monday vs. Castleton.
