Volleyball: Cadets Finish 1-1 at Suffolk Tri-Match

BOSTON, Mass.--The Norwich University volleyball team fell 3-0 to Suffolk University and rebounded to defeat Albertus Magnus College 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Following Saturday's action, the Cadets now sit at 5-17 overall and 3-7 in GNAC action. 

Norwich fell to Suffolk by scores of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-18. 

Junior Kelsey Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.) Norwich against Suffolk with a team-high eight kills. Angie Hershberger (Felton, Calif.) and Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) both added four kills apiece, while Hershberger paced the defense with a match-high 18 digs. Jennette Chartrand (Poestenkill, N.Y.) added 12 digs, while Alex Ruediger (Sandy Lake, Pa.) added 10. 

Sophomore Andrea Moreno (Newark, Del.) recorded a kill and three assists in her first three-set match of the season. 

Suffolk saw 15 kills each from Savannah Carpenter and Tori Brillaud, while Hailey Atkinson chipped in with nine. Colbey Kennedy led the Rams' defense with 12 digs. Glamarys Sierra and Sarah Arbogast split setting duties and totaled 13 and 12 assists, respectively. 

Suffolk totaled an impressive .236 hitting percentage on the afternoon while holding Norwich to a .030 hitting percentage. 

Mancini also totaled a season-high 23 kills in the five-set thriller against Albertus Mangus. The Cadets won the first set by score of 25-19 before dropping sets two and three by scores of 25-19 and 25-16. The Cadets rallied to win game four by a close 25-22 margin to force a fifth set. 

The fifth game was the closest of them all, as it required extra points for one team to take the two-point lead. Norwich prevailed by a score of 18-16.

In addition to Mancini, the Cadets were led offensively with eight kills from Ruediger. Baita dished out 22 assists in the win, while Moreno paced the defense with a match-high 24 digs. 

The Cadets recorded an overall attack percentage of .158 in the five-set thriller while holding the Falcons to a .102 attack percentage. 

Norwich will host Castleton State College on Wednesday, Oct. 30 in non-conference action at 6:00 p.m. Norwich will honor lone senior Chartrand prior to the match. The game will also mark the team's annual "Dig Pink" game to support breast cancer awareness.
