NASHUA, N.H. – The Norwich University men's soccer team scored four first-half goals en route to cruising to a 4-0 win over Rivier University on Saturday in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) season opener for both teams.
Junior center back Wesley Keslin (Brossard, Quebec) scored on a header off a corner just 44 seconds into the match to give Norwich (3-1-0, 1-0-0 GNAC) a lead it would never relinquish.
Freshman midfielder Austen McGuire (Overland Park, Kan.) continued his impressive rookie campaign by adding to the lead in the 17th minute off an assist from junior forward Anthony Amell (Northfield, Vt.).
Junior center back Ryan Campbell (Damascus, Md.) tallied his third goal of the season in the 35th minute to set a new single-season high for the team captain. Classmate Joe Young (McLean, Va.) capped the scoring a little under five minutes later with his first strike of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) picked up the win in net for the Cadets after turning aside two shots. He also recorded his first shutout and the team's third of the year.
Norwich had 22 shots on goal to Rivier's two. The Cadets also had 11 corner kicks to Rivier's five.
With Saturday's victory, Norwich head coach Kyle Dezotell moved to within four wins of breaking the school's all-time career coaching wins record, as well as earning his 100th overall career win.
NU will look to get Dezotell one game closer on Tuesday, Sept. 11 when the Cadets travel to Dezotell's alma mater Middlebury for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference tilt.
