NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior forward Brittany Casey (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) scored on a penalty kick and also added an assist to lead the Norwich University women's soccer team to a 2-0 non-league win over Johnson State on Sunday at Howard Field.

After a slow start to the 2012 campaign, Casey went on a tear this week scoring four goals and also tallying three assists for 11 points to help lead Norwich (3-4-2, 1-2-2 GNAC) to a 2-0-1 week.

Casey sprung fellow senior Courtney Parisot (Watertown, Conn.) on the right wing with a through ball into Johnson State's penalty box. Parisot tracked down the ball and then lofted a shot into the far left corner of the net to give Norwich a 1-0 lead just 6:07 into the match.

Casey then gave Norwich a little bit of breathing room in the second half when she buried a penalty kick attempt at the 73rd minute mark after being tripped up in the box by a JSC defender. Casey beat Johnson State goalkeeper Katja Langmaid to the left leaving the Badgers' keeper flatfooted with no chance to make as save. The goal moved her into a tie with Sara Goes (East Providence, R.I.) for the team lead on the year and marked the 52nd of her career. She is now one goal away from tying Megan Curran '98 for second on the all-time goal scoring list. Maureen Curran '93 holds the all-time record with 59 tallies.

Before Casey's PK goal, Johnson State was mounting pressure but the Badgers were unable to solve NU junior goalkeeper Allison Hull (South Royalton, Vt.) on the day. The Cadets' keeper made two stops and had the help of Shelby Descoteaux (Hudson, N.H.) deflecting an attempt away to pick up her second clean sheet of the season.

Junior forward Grace Fitzpatrick (Portland, Maine) had a couple of grade A chances to extend the Norwich lead in the second half, but she hit the post on one attempt and just pushed a shot wide on another.

Junior midfielder Baylie Lamarre (Tyngsboro, Mass.) also had a goal called back in the second half on a free kick attempt for a NU player being whistled offside in Johnson State's box, negating the pretty shot by Lamarre that just ducked under the cross bar from 30 yards out.

Langmaid made 10 saves for Johnson State (6-3-0, 2-0-0) who had its five-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

Norwich is now unbeaten in its last three games and will travel to Albertus Magnus next Saturday for a crucial Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown. The Cadets beat Albertus Magnus 5-1 last year at Howard Field.
