Softball - Norwich splits opening day games

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Fueled by strong starting pitching from freshman Corrine Baita (Rochester, N.H.), Norwich University earned a 10-1 win over Gordon College March 12.

The Cadets' hurler fired five innings of shutout ball and struck out seven en route to the decision. She received offensive support from several individuals including junior infielder Joanie Emerson (Tyngsboro, Mass.), freshman infielder Melissa Rome and freshman utility player Kelly Travers. Rome had a multiple-hit game which included a double, while Emerson doubled in a run, and Travers also hit a two-bagger.

In the day's first game, Becker College used an early rally to gain a 5-2 win over the Maroon and Gold. Travers, beginning a solid day at the plate, had a double and RBI. Sophomore pitcher Kylie Pratt (Hyde Park, Vt.) came out of the bullpen and fired four strong innings, allowing only two hits and one earned run.

Coach Greg McGrath's squad resumes its appearance at the Snowbird Softball Classic with games against Becker and Albertus Magnus at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 13.
