NORTHFIELD, VT. – Norwich University coach John Hartupee
couldn't have been happier Feb. 11 when the dual between his
Cadets and WPI concluded.
There was plenty to smile about. Norwich, en route to its first
dual win, recorded four bonus-point victories during a 31-12
victory in Andrews Gymnasium.
“I am so happy for our guys,” Hartupee said.
“I told them the biggest reason for this isn't just in
the victory, it's the fact that we battled all afternoon.
That's what we want Norwich wrestling to be about, being
aggressive from the start.”
NU got out of the gate fast. A forfeit win at 125 and another
last-minute win for freshman Alex Stewart (Ellicott City, Md.) put
the Maroon and Gold up 9-0. WPI (4-12) came back with a fall at
141, but sophomore David Pinto (Milford, Mass.), proving his No. 8
ranking on the New England Wrestling Coaches Association poll,
answered with a fall in the final second at 149.
Norwich built its lead even further with decision wins from
sophomore 174-pounder Chris Schenk (Newnan, Ga.) and sophomore
197-pounder Frannie Armstrong (Hanover, Mass.). Sophomore
heavyweight Anthony Joyce (Lincoln, R.I.) ended the dual with a
fall for his 18th win of the year.
Hartupee's team resumes the 2011-12 campaign by sending
individuals to the 2012 New England Wrestling Association Futures
tournament Sunday, Feb. 19. Roger Williams University is the meet
host.
