Men's Soccer: Dezotell becomes all-time coaching wins leader in Cadets' 2-0 win over Emmanuel

Box Score

BOSTON – Juniors Joe Young (McLean, Va.) and Ryan Campbell (Damascus, Md.) each scored goals for the Norwich University men's soccer team as the Cadets downed Emmanuel (Mass.) 2-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Clemente Field on Wednesday night.

With the win, Norwich head coach Kyle Dezotell earned his 100th career coaching victory, as well as broke the NU all-time coaching wins record, surpassing Bob Friske with 89 career victories while guiding the Maroon & Gold over the past seven seasons.

After a relatively even first 40 minutes, the Cadets (7-3-1, 4-1-1 GNAC) got on the board with less than three minutes to play in the first half when Young buried his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Wesley Keslin (Brossard, Quebec).

Keslin played the ball over to Young after controlling a long throw in into the penalty area from junior Mike Ravenelle (Merrimack, N.H.). Young collected the pass, turned to his right while fending off a defender and then fired a shot off with his left foot into the upper left corner of the net and past Emmanuel goalkeeper Garrett Charette.

Norwich added an insurance tally midway through the second half when Campbell headed home a perfectly placed free kick from sophomore midfielder Chris Bristol (Clinton, Conn.) for his fourth goal of the season to put the Cadets up 2-0.

Bristol served the ball from nearly midfield to Campbell who used his 6-foot-2 frame to win a battle in the air with an Emmanuel defender and head the ball into the far right corner of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Greg Payne (State College, Pa.) continued his stellar play between the pipes for Norwich, picking up his second shutout of the season while making seven saves. The reigning GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week improved to 3-1-1 on the year. The Cadets have now posted four straight shutouts and have gone 380+ consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.

Emmanuel (3-6-2, 2-4-0 GNAC) outshot Norwich 15-14 for the game and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Wednesday's match was also a homecoming for first-year assistant coach Mat Koenemann who returned to his alma mater for the first time after a standout four-year career for the Saints.

Norwich is now unbeaten in its last four matches and will look to continue its recent hot streak on Saturday, Oct. 6 when the Cadets host St. Joseph's (Maine) in a rematch of last year's GNAC Tournament Championship. The Monks beat Norwich 4-1 to claim the title. Kickoff for Saturday's match is scheduled for 3 p.m. after the NU women take on St. Joe's at 1 p.m.
