Box Score STANDISH, Maine – The Norwich men's soccer team dropped its third straight match after a 2-1 loss at Saint Joseph's (Maine) in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener on Saturday afternoon.
Saint Joseph's (Maine)'s Ali Hersi scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 75th minute off a pass from Teddy Palmer to give the Monks a 2-1 lead. Hersi beat Norwich goalkeeper Alex Toomey to the bottom right with a shot from the top of the penalty box.
The Monks (2-1, 1-0 GNAC) struck first in the 23rd minute when Zach Johnson scored off a throw in from Mike Sanfilippo to take a 1-0 lead.
However, Norwich (1-4, 0-1 GNAC) responded just over 10 minutes later when junior midfielder Garrett Shufelt scored his third goal of the season with an assist from sophomore defender Ryan Campbell to level the score at one.
Saint Joseph's (Maine) outshot Norwich 17-10.
Kenny Grade recorded two saves on three shots to pick up the win for the Monks. Toomey dropped to 0-3 on the season after making nine saves on 11 shots on net.
After a brutal five-game road stretch to start the season, Norwich will finally play its home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when the Cadets host in-state rival Middlebury at 4 p.m. The game will be video-streamed live on www.nsnsports.net/norwich.
