NASHUA, N.H. – Leah Derderian blasted a
three-run home run, and Courteney Collier struck out 10 batters to
help lead Simmons College to a 5-2 victory over Norwich University
in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament game
Friday afternoon on the campus of Rivier College.
Simmons (22-10) plated one run in the bottom of the first inning
to take a 1-0 lead, but the Sharks were held scoreless by Norwich
starting pitcher Mackenzie Pratt over the next three innings.
Simmons extended its lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning as the
Sharks pushed across four runs. Derderian provided the big blow in
the frame, smashing her first home run of the season.
Norwich (13-23) got two runs back in the top of the seventh
inning on a two-run double by Seana Ellsworth. The Cadets'
rally stalled, though, as Collier got Christine Clark to ground out
to end the game.
Pratt (7-12) was the tough-luck loser in the circle as the
junior hurler allowed just five runs on four hits in 5.0 innings
pitched.
Collier (14-5) yielded two runs on six hits in 7.0 innings. She
had just one walk to go along with the 10 strikeouts.
Jessalyn Sweeney went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace NU's
six-hit attack.
Norwich will return to action on Saturday, April 24, when the
eighth-seeded Cadets play second-seeded St. Joseph's (Maine) in a
GNAC Tournament elimination game at 10 a.m.
