WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Alex Smigelski scored the
game-winning goal midway through the third period, and Ryan Purdy
made 42 saves as No. 9-ranked Williams College ended No. 2-ranked
Norwich University's undefeated season with a 2-1 victory Saturday
afternoon.
Norwich (16-1-4, 12-1-2 ECAC East) held a commanding 43-16 edge
in shots, but the Cadets were only able to get one past Purdy. NU
enjoyed six power play opportunities in the contest, but could not
convert. Williams, meanwhile, cashed in its only power play chance
of the game when Smigelski scored the game-winning goal off assists
from Brian Malchoff and Mike Brofft at the 10:31 mark of the third
period.
Norwich outshot Williams 18-4 in the first period, but the
stanza ended scoreless as Purdy stopped all 18 shots. The Cadets
had three power play opportunities in the initial 20 minutes, but
they were unable to dent the back of the net.
The second period looked a lot like the first, with Norwich
holding a commanding 17-4 edge in shots. The Cadets again enjoyed
three power play chances in the frame, but again they came up
empty. Then, at the 16:37 mark of the second period, Williams broke
the scoreless tie as Mark Lyons scored off feeds from Matt Masucci
and Connor Olvany.
Norwich knotted the score at 9:30 of the third period when
freshman F Colin Mulvey potted his ninth goal of the season off
assists from senior F Craig Serino and sophomore F Tim Houston.
The tie did not last for long, however, as Williams (12-3-3,
10-3-1 NESCAC) struck with the game-winning tally just over one
minute later.
Both teams registered eight shots apiece during the third
period.
Norwich senior G Ryan Klingensmith made 14 saves for the Cadets,
who saw their impressive 20-game unbeaten streak snapped. NU pulled
Klingensmith with 48 seconds to play, but the Cadets were unable to
score the equalizer as they had been able to do in forging ties at
Colby and Babson earlier this season.
Norwich will return home to the friendly confines of Kreitzberg
Arena for the first time since mid-January next weekend (Feb.
12-13), when the Cadets take on ECAC East foes Castleton State and
Skidmore. Live videostreamed broadcasts of both games will be
available via Northeast Sports Network (www.nsnsports.net). Live
radio broadcasts of both contests will be available on WDEV (AM
550/FM 96.1) and online (www.cadetsradio.com).
