NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Senior G Ally Daniels scored
a game-high 15 points, and senior F Jess Jaggars posted a
double-double with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to lead
the Norwich University women's basketball team to a resounding
78-51 victory over Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) contest Wednesday evening at Andrews Hall.
Senior G Erica Rate and junior F Christine Daniels each added 12
points apiece for the Cadets, who improve to 14-5 (6-1 GNAC).
Norwich used a 26-5 run spanning the final five minutes of the
first half and the first four minutes of the second half to turn a
relatively close game into a rout.
Lasell (6-14, 2-5 GNAC) scored the first three points of the
contest, but eight unanswered markers by Norwich gave the Cadets an
8-3 lead at the 14:46 mark. Five points by Katie Farr spurred a 7-0
run by the Lasers, which gave the visitors a 10-8 edge less than
two minutes later. Lasell led 12-11 at the 11:47 mark, but Norwich
responded with a 14-3 run over the next six minutes to move in
front 25-14 with 5:12 to play before halftime.
The Lasers got to within eight points (25-17) less than a minute
later, but NU ended the half on a 12-3 spurt to carry a 37-20 lead
into the intermission. Senior G Natalie Marchese buried a
three-pointer just before the first half buzzer sounded to give the
Cadets their largest lead of the half at the break.
Ally Daniels led all scorers in the first half with nine points.
Sophomore F Tara Stevenson added eight in the first half for the
Cadets, who led by 17 despite shooting just 38.9 percent (14-of-36)
from the field. Lasell struggled from the floor in the opening 20
minutes as well, connecting on just 25.9 percent (7-of-27) of its
shots.
Three triples by Rate helped ignite a 14-2 run by Norwich to
begin the second half as the Cadets opened up a 51-22 advantage
just four minutes into the stanza. Norwich extended its lead to as
many as 30 points later in the frame as the Cadets coasted to their
fourth victory in their last five games.
Farr led Lasell with 12 points, while Reegan Brackett chipped in
10 points. Kim Archibald snared a team-high seven rebounds for the
Lasers, who lost for the seventh time in their last nine games.
Norwich held a commanding 47-32 rebounding edge, which led to an
18-4 advantage in second chance points. NU also scored 24 points
off of 24 Laser turnovers. For the game, the Cadets hit 41.1
percent (30-of-73) of their field goals, while the Lasers converted
32.7 percent (17-of-52) of their attempts from the floor.
Norwich will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, when the
Cadets travel to Standish, Maine, to battle GNAC rival St. Joseph's
(Maine) at 1 p.m.
