NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Senior G Erica Rate scored a
team-high 17 points, and senior G Ally Daniels netted 12 points as
the Norwich University women's basketball team downed Albertus
Magnus College, 79-60, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) opener for both schools Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall.
Rate, who connected on 5-of-10 three-pointers, added a game-high
six steals as well. Junior F Christine Daniels, sophomore F Tara
Stevenson and freshman G Jessalyn Sweeney each chipped in 10 points
apiece to help spur the balanced Norwich attack. Senior F Jess
Jaggars posted eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Norwich
(9-3, 1-0 GNAC).
The game see-sawed back and forth over the first five minutes,
and the score was tied at 10-10 at the 15:20 mark. Six straight
points by Norwich helped the Cadets take a 16-10 lead moments
later, but a 6-2 spurt by Albertus Magnus made it 18-16 at the
12:19 mark. NU used a 14-6 run to grab a 32-22 advantage with 6:33
to play before halftime, and the Cadets built a 45-28 lead at the
intermission.
Norwich began the second half by outscoring Albertus Magnus,
17-4, to build its largest lead of the game at 62-32 at the 11:24
mark. The Falcons were unable to get any closer than 18 points the
rest of the way as the Cadets rolled to the win.
Albertus Magnus (2-9, 0-1 GNAC) was led by Shanilya Bush, who
scored a game-high 18 points. Kendrae Walker posted a double-double
with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Elizabeth Williams added 12
points and four steals.
Norwich will continue its GNAC slate on Tuesday, Jan. 12, when
the Cadets travel to West Hartford, Conn., to take on St. Joseph
(Conn.).
