NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Brian Burke scored three
goals, and Connor Burke added two goals and one assist to lead
Massachusetts Maritime Academy past Norwich University, 12-10, in a
Pilgrim League men's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Howard
Field.
Norwich's Kyle Marzeoti led all scorers with a game-high four
goals and one assist. Kevin Young added a pair of goals for the
Cadets, who fall to 3-9 (0-7 Pilgrim League). Patrick Sikora, Tyler
Nicoll, Tyler Woods and Frank Candelmo each chipped in one goal
apiece for NU. Sikora and Nicoll each tallied assists as well,
while Craig Van Yahres dished out a team-best two assists.
The Buccaneers (8-6, 3-4 Pilgrim League) scored the first four
goals of the contest to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead at the 8:20
mark of the first quarter. A pair of goals by Marzeoti in a span of
42 seconds pulled the Cadets to within 4-2 at the 7:07 mark.
MMA outscored NU, 4-1, over the next 13:03 to build a
comfortable 8-3 lead with 9:04 to play in the second quarter. The
Cadets hung tough, though, and closed the gap to 9-6 at halftime.
A man-up goal by Sikora in the first minute of the third quarter
drew the Cadets to within 9-7, but MMA netted the final two goals
in the stanza to carry an 11-7 advantage into the fourth.
The teams traded goals to start the fourth quarter, but Norwich
scored the last two markers of the frame to account for the final
margin.
Both squads took advantage of their man-up opportunities with
Norwich going 5-for-10 with the extra attacker and MMA converting
2-of-4 man-up chances.
The Buccaneers outshot the Cadets, 46-30. Norwich dominated the
faceoffs, winning 17-of-25.
Norwich will wrap up its 2009 campaign on Tuesday, April 28,
when the Cadets host non-league foe Daniel Webster at Howard Field.
Faceoff for the match is set for 4 p.m.
