NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
women's soccer team extended its win streak to nine straight on
Monday afternoon, defeating in-state rival Castleton State, 1-0, in
a non-conference match at Howard Field.
Junior forward Dawn McNulty scored the game's lone goal in the
fourth minute, and sophomore goalkeeper Alecia Wright made four
saves in the Cadets' goal to make it stand up, as Norwich improves
to 9-2 on the year.
McNulty took a pass from sophomore forward Nikki Szczepanski and
beat Castleton State goalkeeper Cady Kerin at the 3:41 mark to
score what proved to be the game-winning tally.
Kerin kept Castleton State (7-5) in the game throughout, making
six saves for the Spartans.
Norwich outshot Castleton State, 10-9, but the Spartans held a
3-2 edge on corner kicks.
"We have won a lot of one-goal games this year, and this
one was big for us," said Norwich head coach Tyler Renaud.
"Castleton is a quality side, and they played a good game. I
hope we continue to find ways to win these tight games.
"Dawn's goal was well-deserved, especially since
she scored the first time we matched up with Castleton (called
due to lightning). Our defense was very strong,
and Alecia Wright did a great job in net."
Norwich returns to its conference slate on Wednesday, Oct. 8,
when the Cadets travel to Boston, to take on GNAC rival Simmons at
